Travel highlights of 2018

Due to unforeseen circumstances we have to abandon our summer holiday plan in Scotland and Wales this year, which we would have spent with friends. However, the warm weather in spring saw us visiting Peterborough’s country park in Ferry Meadows several times. We did manage to squeeze in a day-out in Stonehenge and Windsor Castle in June. On my own, I went to Nottingham also in June and near York in September on work-related travels.

My wife suffered from a nerve injury to her back immediately after a major operation in November the previous year. This resulted to her being off from work up to the first half of this year as well. Travelling outside of Peterborough was out of the question due to her back injury and weak and painful legs; instead, we focused our attention to her getting well as soon as possible. Aside from the regular hospital and GP surgery appointments, we visited Ferry Meadows several times in the spring for walks to strengthen her legs. We even managed to have a picnic in the park together with our supportive friends.

In June, we managed to have a day-out in Stonehenge and Windsor Castle as my wife had a visitor who came from the US – her college classmate Jay and his wife Debbie, who went on a week-long holiday in England and Scotland. A week before, our family joined other Catholic parishioners in Peterborough for the One Mass and International Celebration inside Peterborough Cathedral.

In August, we went to Peterborough Cathedral to see Tim Peake’s spaceship exhibition. A few days later, we went to our favourite outlet shopping centre, Springfields in nearby Spalding to buy school shoes for our eldest son. Afterwards, we took a stroll at the adjacent Springfields Festival Gardens.

For a change, I joined my work colleagues in our quarterly team meetings – in Nottingham on a team-building visit to Wollaton Hall last June and then to Lower Derwent Valley NNR near York in September. And on my own, I travelled through time and space in my city of Peterborough last October.

What does 2019 offer us in terms of travel? With UK leaving the EU in March and my wife continuing with her recovery, who knows. We will deal with it when the time comes.

Goodbye and thank you 2018 and looking forward to a healthy and hopefully more travel in the year 2019! Cheers!
