Tim Peake's spacecraft landed in Peterborough Cathedral

Story | VR Experience

British astronaut Tim Peake's spacecraft landed in Peterborough Cathedral last 11 August and is expected to be there until 5 November 2018!

So, there we were at the city centre one Sunday afternoon having lunch at our favourite chicken restaurant, Nandos, when we saw the crowd gathering near the Peterborough Cathedral. Curious, and stomachs full with our favourite peri-peri chicken and chips, we decided to join the crowd as they went inside the cathedral.

And there it was still attached to its parachute! A rather tiny spacecraft that was able to fit in three astronauts as they journey back to Earth from space. If you are claustrophobic you will not probably survived the journey back.

Word went around that Tim Peake was with the spacecraft when it landed the day before. But he managed to sneak out of the crowd but not before leaving behind the spacesuit he wore that day.

Enough of my pathetic attempt at creative writing, here are the facts from Visit Peterborough:
Peterborough Cathedral is delighted to announce that it has won a nationwide competition to host Tim Peake’s Soyuz spacecraft – Soyuz TMA-19M – and a Space Descent VR experience.

It will be displayed in the Cathedral from Saturday 11th August until Monday 5th November 2018. It is also expected that Tim Peake’s own spacesuit will also be part of the display, as well as the parachute used in the spacecraft’s return to earth.

The announcement was made at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester on Friday 9th March. It follows an open competition last year to win the opportunity to be the sixth location on the spacecraft’s national tour. Five venues from across the country entered a shortlist, including Millennium Point in Birmingham and The Forum in Norwich, but it is Peterborough Cathedral that has been chosen.

The Soyuz TMA-19M spacecraft was used by Tim Peake for his mission to the International Space Station in 2015–2016.

We were unable to go inside the Space Descent VR experience as it required prior booking so maybe next time. Instead I offer you another VR experience because I brought along my Xiaomi Mi Sphere 360 panoramic camera (https://amzn.to/2PVAknw) and took some 360 photos. I will write about it in a later post.

I also brought along my Olympus OMD EM5 Mark II (https://amzn.to/2C8J86m) with Olympus mZuiko 12-50mm kit lens (https://amzn.to/2Nyftoz) to get the other photos in this blog post.
