One sunny day in Skegness Beach

On the last Sunday of August, a day before the Summer Bank Holiday, we joined hundreds of other beach goers as we flocked to sandy Skegness Beach to enjoy the sun, sea and its golden sands. A fitting way to end this late summer month, which was at times cloudy, rainy and sunny all throughout.

A late invite to celebrate a friend's birthday at the beach have helped influenced our teenagers to go out of the house at least for a day. We started the day with Sunday mass followed by lunch at the nearby famous fast food restaurant famous for lovin' it. We declined our friend's lunch celebration at a Chinese restaurant because of our son's multiple food allergies.

Happy that our stomachs were now filled with lovin' food, we head off to Skegness Beach which is an hour-and-a-half-plus drive by car, ahead of the others. Arriving at the Tower Esplanade at around 3PM, the seaside town was already buzzing with people and parking was already spilling out onto the beach.

The rest of the group, we were a 15-strong contingent representing land-locked Peterborough, arrived shortly afterwards. We head off to the beach and just spent maybe a couple of hours just soaking in the sun and admiring the sea and the golden sands from afar. Some in our group waded into the cold water for awhile and clowning around for live social media.

The last time our family went to Skegness was in summer 2011, that time our son's ages of 6 and 8, respectively, were perfect for donkey riding at the beach and amusement parks. On this recent visit, we skipped the donkey rides for obvious reasons.

Our eyes full from feasting on the views of Skegness Beach, we went to the nearby amusement park but it was getting dark so we just roamed around. The teenagers in our group were understandably somewhat bemused that we spent more time at the beach than at the amusement park.

And if you are in Skegness, you have to eat their famous fish and chips! At least that's what our complaining stomachs told us to so we went to Trawlers Catch, highly recommended by the birthday celebrant in our group. In our 2011 visit, we ate at a different and smaller fish and chip shop, again based on the recommendation of a friend in our group. I wonder if they were getting anything from these shops for being fish and chips 'influencers'.

Anyway, just before we head back home we spent our last hour in now dark Skegness town centre at the arcade where our teenagers gladly wasted our hard-earned money on fun games. They came back to us with their winning tickets only to be converted to about 5 generic lollipops! What a return of investment, eh?
