Lesser horseshoe bat



According to Wikipedia:

The lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros), is a type of European bat related to but smaller than its cousin, the greater horseshoe bat. The species gets its name from its distinctive horseshoe-shaped nose.

The lesser horseshoe bat is one of the world's smallest bats, weighing only 5 to 9 grams, with a wingspan of 192–254 mm and a body length of 35–45 mm. It has strong feet that it uses to grasp rocks and branches, and can see well in spite of its small eyes. Like most bats, lesser horseshoe bats live in colonies and hunt their prey by echolocation, emitting ultrasound from specialized round pads in their mouth.

Nathusius' Pipistrelle





Nathusius' pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii) is a rare bat in the UK although its distribution is widespread.

I got hold of this postcard and that of the lesser horseshoe bat (in later post) from a visit to the office of the Bat Conservation Trust in London. My pencil pushing work involves working with this NGO, which is devoted to the conservation of bats in the country.

I was planning to continue posting in my old blog, Pinoyborian. I reviewed it recently, changed its look and started thinking about future posts - even drafted an article to publish soon. Started in 2008, Pinoyborian was my attempt at creating a personal blog that will chronicle my life's journey as an immigrant with a young family. I was starting a new life in a faraway country and facing lots of new challenges in an uncertain future ahead of us.
