A quick visit to Leicester Cathedral

In summer of 2016, the family made a very quick tour of Leicester Cathedral, or the Cathedral Church of St. Martin as it is officially known. The cathedral is located right at the heart of Leicester's Old Town, a short five-minute walk from Highcross Shopping Centre.

We used to be regular visitors to one of Leicester's hospitals because of my wife's asthma where she needed to be seen by a specialist consultant. But we don't get to see the rest of the city during those visits. As it was summer and the children not in school we decided to go early and had a bit of a wander off in the city centre. And that included a visit to Leicester Cathedral to see the tomb of King Richard III.

As it is usually with our family travels, we always started with a good plan that will not materialise. The reason? We left late in the morning and when we arrived at Highcross we did a bit of window shopping then had lunch. And we overstayed our lunch, which left us with just half an hour to tour Leicester Cathedral before we head off to my wife's appointment at the hospital.

As we come from a city with a large magnificent cathedral, Leicester Cathedral is much smaller but still a beauty to behold. We made our way inside to see King Richard III's tomb; unfortunately, no photography was allowed inside it and was strictly enforced by the church volunteers. The stained glass windows were beautiful though and there was a display about King Richard when we were there so we had a quick tour as well.

The quick tour is but a taster of what the Cathedral has to offer to first time visitors. I hope to visit it again and stay longer and hopefully get to see more of Leicester city itself.

All photos were taken with an Olympus OMD E-M10 micro four thirds camera attached with the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 standard kit lens.
